My name is James Stewart Courtney and I grew up in the Columbia, SC area. I graduated from Lexington High School in 2005. In 2012, I realized what my passion was and that was to be in the mental health field. In 2015, I completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology from Liberty University and got accepted into their master’s degree program. Upon completing my bachelor’s degree, I spent time in Kampala, Uganda and helped serve an organization that assisted orphaned boys in Kampala. In 2016, I worked at a local mental health hospital as a mental health technician. In 2017, I took a position as an office/practice manager at a psychiatrist office in Columbia, SC. I served in this role for 3 years. In 2019, while in my master’s degree program, I took a trip to Goa, India and helped counsel the staff of an anti-sex trafficking organization called Rahab’s Rope. In May of 2019, I finished up my master’s degree and then headed back to India. I served with Rahab’s Rope again, except this time, I was at a women’s detox center in Manipur, India. This detox center was one that helped women who had been rescued from sex trafficking. These women were there to get clean, receive mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological help, so that they could return back to their homes and redeem/restore the life that was stripped from them. During both degrees, I worked full-time, served in various ministry roles, all while also maintaining an acceptable GPA. After my trip to Manipur, I passed the national counselor exam and started my journey as a therapist in Columbia, SC. I have an eclectic approach to therapy, in which I use multiple modalities and techniques to best serve my clients. My genuine, calm, and welcoming approach to therapy helps me establish rapport quickly and lessen the worries that my clients initially have when they come in for therapy. I believe in the whole body/mind/environment approach to mental health, where a person focuses on every facet of their body, mind, and environment in order to be the healthiest versions of themselves that they can possibly be. My goal is to be present and available in the community in order to see a healthier Columbia and a healthier South Carolina.
